Dole, Museum of fine art and archeology

Established in 1821, the museum moved in 1980 to the Pavillon des officiers, an eighteenth century Comté-style building.  Its collections are divided into three sections:  archaeology, ancient art and contemporary art.

The archaeology section initiated by Julien Feuvrier, has a collection devoted to archaeological finds in the Jura from the Neolithic to the Merovingian period.  The ancient art collection reveals the prosperity of the town of Dole, capital of Comté until 1678. It is presented in chronological order with an approach that highlights thematic aspects (landscapes, still life, religious scenes, mythology etc.) Burgundy and Comté art from the Middle Ages to the eighteenth century, French seventeenth/eighteenth century painting  (S. Vouet, E. Allegrain, Ch.-A.Coypel), Italian school (F. Albani, L. Giordano, G. Assereto) and Nordic school (Maître de Saint-Gilles, J. de Momper, P. van Boucle), together with a nineteenth century collection, devoting much attention to the Comté landscape school (G. Courbet, M. Ordinaire, A. Pointelin). The history of the Comté of Burgundy is presented in scenes of conquest painted by van der Meulen, Martin des Batailles and Martin des Gobelins. Finally, a contemporary art collection includes works by artists who painted in France from the 1960s, centred on narrative representation (Rancillac, Monory, Erro, Fromanger etc.) and neo-realism (Arman, Hains, Villéglé etc.).
