A historical and industrial highpoint in Franche-Comté, the Saltworks in Salins were awarded World Heritage Site status by UNESCO on 27 June 2009, as an extension to the Royal Saltworks in Arc-et-Senans.
The visit starts with an exploration of the 13th century underground gallery with its still functioning 19th-century hydraulic pumping system. This pump continues to draw brine from the earth containing 330 g of salt for every litre of water.
The Pans Room allows visitors to imagine the tough working conditions for salt workers up until 1962. The pan, unique in France, bears witness to their hard labour.
The Salt Museum, opened on 1 May 2009, houses exhibition rooms that allow the public to discover areas that were previously inaccessible. It also has a special area for children where educational workshops are held during holiday periods, offering them unforgettable experiences.
