For many years, fire was the main threat fought against by the "pump guardians" of the 18th century, who eventually became today's firefighters. Technical progress and the industrialisation of the country started at the end of the 19th century, followed by technological development and the emergence of a leisure society have resulted in new risks, expanding the original role of fire and emergency services.
The Jura Firefighters Museum named after Pierre Morisot (Inspector of the Jura Departmental Fire and Emergency Service who died on duty on 29 November 1972) and which is opening its doors from 25 April 2010, traces the development of the techniques used to fight fire and various other threats together with the emergency assistance provided.
A building measuring 950 m2, on the site of the Maison du Patrimoine Rural Jurassien, houses numerous vehicles, material and equipment dating from the 1850s to 1980 which was used in the Jura both to combat fires, natural disasters and to provide emergency support to their victims.
