Nozeroy, home of the Chalon family

Built on an outcrop right in the middle of the second plateau, this little comté city is full of surprises!
Founded by Jean l’Antique in the XIII century, Nozeroy is the birthplace of one of the most powerful Jura families of the Middle Ages, the Chalons. As princes of Orange, they maintained a glittering court, surrounding themselves with artists, and instituted several richly endowed religious foundations. Remains of the château and fortifications encircle the town, and the religious and secular architecture is everywhere in evidence: Nozeroy, Censeau and Mièges now reveal much evidence of this glamorous past.

To find out more, read « Nozeroy, Censeau, Mièges, land of the Chalons » published in 2005 by the Centre Jurassien du Patrimoine (Jura Heritage Centre) in collaboration with the Departmental Conservation service.
